The UK Government will be performing a nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts service at 3pm on Sunday 23rd April 2023 to ensure that the system works effectively. As part of the test 4G and 5G mobile phones will make a loud siren-like sound and vibrate for up to 10 seconds and will stop automatically. All you need to do is click 'OK' or swipe to remove the message from the home screen and continue to use your phone as normal.
Emergency Alerts is a new service from the UK Government. It went live on Sunday 19th March 2023. In the event of an emergency, the system will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone when lives are in danger, such as severe flooding.
If you get an Emergency Alert on your phone, you'll hear a loud, siren-like sound. A message on your screen will tell you about the emergency and how to best respond and stay safe. It will remain on your screen until you acknowledge the message. You can check if an alert is genuine by visiting www.gov.uk/alerts.
Emergency Alerts are sent to all compatible mobile phones, within an area of risk. They don't track your location, need your phone number, or collect personal data. Only the Government and the emergency services will be able to send them. If you don't have a compatible mobile phone, you will still be kept informed through other channels.
You can find out more information regarding the reasons why you may get an alert here - Reasons for alerts.
Emergency alerts are broadcast from mobile phone masts. Every compatible mobile phone, within its range, will receive an alert if one is issued.
You can find out more information about how Emergency Alerts will work here - How emergency alerts work.
